    By uniting the top professionals in our industry, PFDI provides exceptional opportunities for networking and developing professional relationships. Members share ideas and advice, and strong friendships are formed in this supportive, non-competitive environment. When you face challenges in your business it can be helpful to call someone you trust, who has been through a similar experience with their staff, finances, or facility and can offer guidance.

    Our program is unlike any other in the industry. PFDI members visit the top universities in the country to hone their business skills and practices. We have attended programs at both the famous Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and Owen School of Management at Vanderbilt.

    Service is the same in any business, so we turn to the best in other industries to get advice on how to perfect our customer relations. PFDI went to the Ritz Carlton to study with Dr. Joseph Michelli, author of Ritz Carlton: The New Gold Standard and The Starbucks Experience. D. Michelli spoke to PFDI members about how he helped create the value statements and beliefs that have made these companies top in customer service.

    Upon the invitation of various members, PFDI visits different member’s facilities, offering a chance for everyone to see all that this firm is doing well and offer the owner suggestions on what could be even better. This personal critique can be invaluable advice and covers anything from facility, to staff, to service offerings.

    Before changing our name to Preferred Funeral Directors International, PFDI was called, Advertising Funeral Directors of America. Marketing has always been at the forefront of our association, and we continue to focus on advertising innovation. At our annual convention, we offer an ad fair where members stand up and share their best ad ideas of the year.


For over 75 years, PFDI has been an exclusive, invitation-only professional organization for leaders in the death care industry. Formerly established as the Advertising Funeral Directors of America in 1937, PFDI was the first marketing-oriented professional association of its kind. For over 65 years, PFDI has been committed to stimulating and sharing marketing and management innovation in the quality of funeral service its exclusive members provide.


Membership in this Association is by invitation only and shall consist of individual proprietorships, partnerships or corporations engaged in the business of funeral directing, and whose firms are non-competing, privately held and whose management or controls is not in or by a publicly held corporation or limited partnership and whose qualifications shall be approved by the Board of Directors.
